International Rehabilitation Experience: Ukrainian specialists acquired innovative trauma treatment techniques

Over the course of two weeks in April, a unique series of trainings entitled “Healing in Action: Self-Help Techniques for Veterans” was held as part of the “Veterans Without Borders” project. The program was led by Mikael Fromeyer, a certified psychotherapist from Luxembourg, who came to Ukraine on a volunteer basis to share his knowledge with Ukrainian professionals.

Record-Breaking Interest

The program generated significant interest among the professional community — we received over 150 applications from psychologists, social workers, medical personnel, and volunteers working with veterans and their families. Due to the limited number of spots, a careful selection process was conducted to choose participants.

Program Structure

The trainings were conducted in two series:

First series (April 22–24):

  • Day 1: “Stabilization – Part 1” with introduction to the EFT technique

  • Day 2: “Stabilization – Part 2” with further development of EFT skills

  • Day 3: “TRE – Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises”

Second series (April 28–30):
An identical program for the second group of participants.

Each group consisted of 8–10 participants, allowing for an individual approach and high-quality learning of the material.

Innovative Methods

Participants of the training mastered three powerful techniques:

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) – a method of rapid emotional stabilization that combines acupressure with cognitive techniques. This approach allows for a quick reduction in the intensity of negative emotions and stress responses.

REMAP – an innovative approach to working with traumatic memories that helps reduce their emotional impact without the need for a detailed retelling of the traumatic event.

TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) – a unique somatic practice that activates the body’s natural mechanism for trauma release through controlled muscular trembling.

Additional Activities

In addition to the main training sessions, Mikael conducted:

  • Two open sessions for the general public on the basics of self-help

  • A specialized session for medical professionals

  • Individual consultations for participants

Results and Feedback

All 18 participants who completed the full training course received international certificates confirming their qualification in the application of the learned techniques

“These techniques have radically changed my approach to working with clients who have experienced trauma. Now I have specific tools that can be applied immediately,”
shared one of the participants.

His decision to come to Ukraine as a volunteer has become a true gift to the Ukrainian professional community.

Program Continuation

This training cycle has become part of a new workshop series entitled “Transformation of Experience”, launched by the NGO Borderlands Ukraine Foundation.
Our goal is to create a permanent platform for knowledge exchange between Ukrainian and international experts in the field of psychological rehabilitation.

The success of the program and the high demand for training have encouraged us to continue collaborating with Mikael Fromeyer. In the near future, we plan to launch a series of online sessions to reach a broader audience and provide ongoing support for professionals.
